Description

CuriOdyssey is looking for an energetic, motivated, team orientated person, open to a positively changing environment to fill the position of Animal Keeper.

DEFINITION
The incumbent assists with the care and maintenance of all living animals and the wildlife habitats at CuriOdyssey. Some of the animals in the Living Collection include: River Otters, Bobcat, Raccoons, various amphibians and snakes (including Northern Pacific Rattle snakes), Raptors and more. The Animal Keeper will assist in the supervision of the apprentice, and wildlife volunteers.

FUNCTION

1. Participates in the maintenance of the Wildlife habitats, which includes servicing habitats and night quarters, as well as preparing diets and feeding animal collection.
2. Participates in veterinary procedures and assists with emergency treatment of animals.
3. Participates with the development and implementation of enrichment.
4. Participates in building and grounds maintenance, including cleaning / repair of exhibits, equipment and pond cleaning.
5. Assist with the maintenance and improvement of animal husbandry standards; minor renovations, and improvements within the department.
6. Meets with supervisors regularly to address animal health care, safety, and facility maintenance.
7. Trains and supervises volunteers and apprentice as requested by supervisors.
8. Shows handleable animals in informal encounters.
9. Presents information at scheduled animal feedings.
10. Interacts with visitors and offers information on exhibited animals.
11. Carries out job-related tasks as requested by supervisor.

Education and Pre-requisites

Experience: Any combination of education and experience equal to graduation from high school and a minimum of two years paid captive wild animal experience. Experience handling and presenting animals is preferred. A degree in biology, zoology, wildlife management or a related field is preferred.

Knowledge of: The methods, science, and practices of captive wild animal management; proper record keeping practices; basic equipment and maintenance and cleaning techniques; animal husbandry.

Vaccinations: Possession of or willingness to obtain at CuriOdyssey’s expense vaccination for tetanus, hepatitis B and pre-exposure rabies series.

Conditions: Must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions. Must be willing to handle venomous animals after training. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Must have/obtain valid CA driver’s license.

Compensation and benefits

Salary range: $19.00 per hour
