Description
Professional & Personable Animal Caretaker desired for private facility in Jupiter, Florida. As part of the owner’s commitment to philanthropy and animal education our animals are used in philanthropic programs serving the elderly, veterans and children in our community.
Keeper is responsible for the daily care, maintenance, and cleaning of housing/enclosures for: goats, wallabies, emus, rabbits, guinea pigs, pot bellied pigs, llamas, a variety of tortoises, chickens, turkeys, and Patagonian Maras.
Job Duties include (but are not limited to):
Preparation of diets and feeds as outlined in Animal Nutrition Guidebook
Follows diet and nutrition protocols while preparing feed
Ensures food preparation area is clean, disinfected and properly sanitized as set forth by USDA and Weisberg Stables.
Assists with handling of animals for use in Ambassador programs
Weighs and records animal weights on biweekly or monthly schedule
Provides general first aid and worming;
Keeps detailed records of care and illnesses;
Supervision of visitors;
Provides educational tours as required;
Assists in the performance of specialized animal care, including baby and immature animal care;
Assists in capturing, crating and transportation as animals as required for evacuation or medical care.
Prepares daily written and electronic reports to supervisor on any changes in behavior, diet, sickness, reproductive status, etc.;
Supervises, approves and presents for approval animal operant conditioning/behavior and enrichment plans;
conducts animal operant conditioning/behavioral sessions, conditions new behaviors;
Creates and manages enrichment activities for animals to include environmental, sensory and food enrichment depending on species.
collecting fertile and non-fertile eggs; preparing eggs for sale and incubation;
Inspects animals daily and reports/records any noticeable health issues to management immediately,
assisting vet, and scheduling routine and emergency vet appointments;
Maintains safe and sanitary workspace;
Assists with training and supervision of interns and volunteers;
Education and Pre-requisites
Fluent in written and spoken English.
Legal to work in USA
Bachelor’s degree in zoology, Animal Behavior or related sciences.
Min. 2 years previous professional (paid) experience as an animal caretaker in a Zoo, Sanctuary, Nature Center, Multi Species farm, or exotic breeding facility.
Ability to stand, walk, bend and move for extended periods of time and work outdoors in varied climates for entire shift.
Able to lift and carry 40 pounds regularly and lift up to 75 pounds on occasion.
