Description

The Oregon Zoo is pleased to be recruiting for a General Curator – Animal Care & Conservation. This position leads a progressive team of animal care and conservation professionals, maximizing opportunities for animals to thrive, both in the Zoo and in the wild. The General Curator (GC) provides strategic direction and best practices for animal care and conservation, including responsibilities for developing, implementing and evaluating the administrative, operational and planning functions of the animal care (Curator and Animal Care staff) and conservation programs within Oregon Zoo’s Care, Connection & Conservation department. Specifically, the GC is responsible for: leading collaborative collection planning; exhibit design and modification; directing, supervising, training and evaluating the work of the Curators; ensuring appropriate development, training and evaluation of animal care staff; directing and developing the Zoo’s field conservation programs; and integrating animal care efforts with the Zoo’s conservation and education goals.

This position exercises independent judgment within established guidelines and policies, under the direction of the Zoo’s Deputy Director – Care, Connection & Conservation.

Education and Pre-requisites

• Five years progressively responsible experience in directing, managing and supervising an animal care program in an AZA accredited facility, and
• Two years project management experience in an animal care program in a zoo or related facility, and
• Bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, zoology or related field; or
• Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

• Master’s degree in Biology, Anthropology, Zoology, Animal Science or related field preferred.
• Experience with endangered species management, conservation and research practices, including: husbandry, study design and methodology, data collection, analysis and documentation preferred.

Compensation and benefits

Initial salary placement will be commensurate with experience
Salary: $97,509.00 – $138,505.00 annually
