Summary:

Under the supervision of the Husbandry Manager, the Registrar/Veterinary Technician is responsible for administering and managing the animal records database, Tracks; maintaining all associated permits and licenses required for possessing, exhibiting, and transporting live animals; documenting and helping coordinate all animal transactions; and providing support and coverage to the Veterinary Technician and Veterinarian for a collection of birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, and invertebrates. This role is roughly evenly split between Registrar and Veterinary Technician duties.

Major Job Responsibilities:

*Administer, manage, and train others on electronic animal record-keeping program, Tracks, with an eye for detail, accuracy, consistency, and adherence to record-keeping standards and guidelines.
*Check/enter historical records for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to record-keeping standards and guidelines.
*Ensure all relevant permits and licenses are acquired and maintained, including sending reports to regulatory agencies as necessary, including AZA, USDA, CDFW, USFWS, CDFA, etc.
*Assist in coordinating animal transactions with respect to adherence to policies, procedures, documentation, and regulations.
*Compile annual inventory for USDA, AZA, and other standards/regulatory agencies.
*Assist Husbandry Managers with ensuring that the Husbandry team as a whole is aware of regulatory updates and requirements.
*Perform medical procedures, including administering/monitoring anesthesia, radiology, blood collection, euthanasia, etc. under the supervision of the Veterinarian.
*Assist Veterinarian in performing routine diagnostic tests, including hematology, cytology, and parasitology.
*In conjunction with Husbandry Managers, assess and communicate new animal problems to the Veterinarian, evaluating and triaging new cases as they arise.
*Maintain medical records, tracking treatments performed, medications given, and laboratory reports received.
*May perform necropsies, including recording observations and findings and collecting/preparing/tracking tissues for evaluation.
*Administer medical treatments within the limitations of the law, including medical calculations such as dilutions & dosages and dispensing & tracking drugs with precision.
*Provide coverage for Veterinary Technician by assuming additional responsibilities when necessary. Such duties might include coordinating and streamlining veterinary rounds and case scheduling; maintaining hospital inventory, order, and cleanliness; and monitoring the health & welfare of hospitalized and quarantined animals.
*Perform other duties as needed.

Education and Pre-requisites

*California RVT license required or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
*1+ year veterinary technician experience under the supervision of a veterinarian required. Experience with exotic animals highly preferred. This would include the ability to properly use common veterinary medical supplies and equipment, administer animal medications, and safely handle/restrain a variety of animals.
*1+ year experience working with animal records or in husbandry at a zoo or aquarium, preferably an AZA-accredited institution. This experience would include familiarity with the regulatory agencies, permits, and licenses relevant to collecting, possessing, exhibiting, and transporting live animals as well as an understanding of the principles of good animal inventory/veterinary record keeping. Experience with the record-keeping software Tracks highly desirable.
*Ability to safety anesthetize/monitor birds, reptiles, small mammals, and fish and the confidence and ability to perform euthanasia and necropsies highly preferred.
*Experience working with USDA, FDA, AZA, and other regulatory standards and policies with regard to veterinary care for animals in human care.
*Working knowledge of standard husbandry skills for a variety of animals.
*Ability to perform basic in-house laboratory tests, such as fecal analysis, hematocrit, and cytology.
*Ability to use computer programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
*Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
*Self-starter with excellent attention to detail and the capacity to use good judgment and use of decision-making authority.
*Good written and oral communication skills required; including the ability to clearly, compassionately, and respectfully engage in discussion and prevent/resolve conflict with a diverse staff in a team setting.
*Ability to remain calm and focused during stressful situations.
*Ability to work independently and as a team member.
*Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds.
*Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, holidays, and some evenings.

Compensation and benefits
