Audubon Louisiana Nature Center is currently accepting applications for 2019 internship placements for Planetarium Intern.

The team at ALNC is small, and multi-faceted. Regular staff perform most functions for the entire 86-acre complex to celebrate the wonders of Louisiana’s nature with guests in a way that inspires them.

Internship Overview:
Audubon Louisiana Nature Center (ALNC) is seeking candidates interested in learning basic planetarium operation and presentation skills. Interns will develop public speaking and interpretation skills to perform educational and entertaining presentations in formal (seated audience), and informal (casual) situations. Interns will learn basic show-building techniques utilizing the Digistar system. Requires a 20-24 hour per week commitment for 12-14 weeks. Working on weekends and holidays may be required. Internship is unpaid.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Learn basic planetarium operation, maintenance, programming; and gain skills to present shows in front of the public
Learn presentation and public speaking skills to effectively conduct formal and informational chats about various nature related topics relevant to New Orleans, and the night sky
Provide excellent customer service for guests and engaging interpretation
Create an intern project that will be approved by the ALNC leadership and shared with the Digistar community
Qualifications:

Interested in pursuing a career in planetarium operations, show building, and presentations and/or astronomy, astrophysics or related field
Is enthusiastic, friendly, and works well with a team and independently
Willing to perform public presentations to varying age groups
Must be able to consistently lift 25 pounds, as well as bend and stoop momentarily
Must be willing to work in near complete darkness for extended times
Willing to perform a variety of tasks, both sedentary and active
Willing to interact with Nature Center guests both inside and outside venues
Required Qualifications:

Some college with coursework in Astronomy, or ability to demonstrate equivalent knowledge
Demonstrate ability to learn and apply astronomical concepts
Preferred Qualifications:

Seeking college degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Digital Media or Theatre, with coursework in Public Speaking
Planetarium-specific presentation experience, or theater performance, theme park host, or high school/college level teaching experience
Desire to work in informal education setting
The Planetarium intern presents live and pre-recorded programs in ALNC’s domed-screen theater environment and assists in other areas of the facility, as required.

Responsible for:

Monitoring the operation of theater systems
Logging and reporting condition of theater systems
Interacting with guests in a friendly and informative manner before and after shows
Performing other duties as assigned by supervisors
