Description
Grow your career as an animal care professional by joining the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo (WICZ)! We are currently recruiting for a 16-month limited term full-time Animal Welfare & Safety Program Coordinator in our Animal Care, Health & Welfare (ACHW) branch. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, updating, and maintaining documentation and resources associated with animal safety and welfare/wellbeing programs at the WICZ.
If you are a systems thinker who has experience in committee administration/coordination as well as experience compiling resources and developing comprehensive training plans and materials, this is the role for you.

What you will do:
Welfare, Ethics & Research Committee (WERC) Coordination:
Collect resources from 2022 Recommendations, prepare documentation, workflow and SharePoint libraries/pages with proper branding and organizational representation
Prepare draft committee role descriptions and committee Terms of Reference based on recommendations and guidance from key internal stakeholders
Prepare framework/guidelines for pre-submission documentation
Assume responsibility for WERC meeting preparedness and facilitation after implementing changes
Organizational Welfare Training Framework Project:
Using CCAC resources, San Diego Global Academy (SDGA) resources, Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) resources, existing internal training (Visitor Engagement, Human Resources, ACHW branches) and guidance from key internal stakeholders, prepare a training matrix and recommended approach for Animal Welfare/Wellbeing training for staff, volunteers, and committee members
Prepare training courses/delivery model recommendations for WICZ, including defining employee/volunteer/contractor culture and onboarding needs, working with People Services to plan and implement organizational change
Responsible for Internal Welfare Reporting System
Reviewing current anonymous reporting process, adjusting as needed
Embedding process awareness into volunteer/employee onboarding
Reviewing reported concerns and directing to appropriate escalation point
Cascading communications from point of report to resolution
Special Projects Support:
Accreditation Application support
Care, Health & Welfare Meeting preparedness and follow-up
Species360/ZIMS Welfare Module implementation support
Animal Near Miss Reporting, Animal Incident Reporting:
Launching processes in Health and Safety Management Software ZooTracks (currently Lighthouse)
Creation of training/reference documents
System Administrator training
Process oversight and reporting
Protocol Proofing/Publishing/Circulation:
Development of internal training and acknowledgement modules
Formatting review and updates, publishing changes
Assignment in LMS (currently Articulate & Saba Talentspace)
Animal Welfare Program Audit and Improvement:
Compile all existing animal welfare program components for ACHW branch review
Compare existing WICZ program with AZA accreditation standards and AZA Strategic Framework for the Wellbeing of Animals
Assist animal care management team in upgrading program components where necessary
General Duties:
Complies with and reinforces all policies, procedures, and guidelines applicable to the mixed workforce (Calgary Zoological Society, Calgary Zoo Foundation, City of Calgary, Contracted workers)
General Administrative Support services for Animal Care, Health & Welfare Branch
Working Conditions:
Office based role in an open office environment
Potential desk sharing/flexibility required
Primarily computer work
Monday to Friday schedule
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is a no smoking environment including vaping.
Education and Pre-requisites
What you will bring:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Animal Sciences, Biology, or Zoology, is preferred
Minimum 3 years’ experience in committee administration/coordination as well as experience compiling resources and developing comprehensive training plans and materials
Anima Care experience is considered a strong asset
Experience with formal animal welfare assessment is a strong asset
Experience with Rise 360, Articulate, Saba TalentSpace, or another Learning Management System is considered an asset
Experience with Lighthouse or another Health and Safety Management System reporting software is considered an asset
Experience using Species360 (Zoological Information Management System) or other zoo software is an asset
Excellent organization and communication skills
