Position Title: Hoofstock Area Supervisor
Department: Mammal Department

Reports To: Mammal Curator

Summary
Nashville Zoo is currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our Hoofstock Team as a Hoofstock Area Supervisor. In this role, you will lead a dedicated team of keepers responsible for the care of our hoofstock collection. We are looking for a candidate who possesses a strong work ethic, internal motivation, a passion for animal care, and the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team.

Responsibilities
• Manage and mentor a team of keepers, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence in animal care.
• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive protocols for animal care, keeper safety, and equipment maintenance in the animal exhibits and associated facilities and service areas. Collaborate with the Curator and other supervisory staff to ensure compliance with Nashville Zoo, TWRA, OSHA, and AZA standards, as well as all relevant government regulations.
• Lead the management and evaluation of Nashville Zoo’s enrichment programs, focusing on enhancing animal welfare. Utilize expertise to develop, document, and assess enrichment plans in alignment with Nashville Zoo, AZA, and USDA standards. Provide guidance and training to staff members, ensuring their proficiency in implementing approved enrichment plans and maintaining compliance.
• Assess the needs of the animal collection and take proactive measures to meet those needs by initiating food orders and work orders for repairs, renovations, and maintenance of exhibits, facilities, and systems. Ensure sufficient inventory of supplies, equipment, and animal foods to support the smooth operation of the Animal Department.
• Responsible for coordinating the medical care needed for the animal collection following the instructions of the veterinary staff.
• Ensure the welfare of the animals under our care by diligently following procedures for assessment and documentation. Additionally, maintain accurate and detailed daily records to track the well-being and progress of the animals.
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of all animal-related installations, providing supervision to keeper staff, seasonal workers, interns, and volunteers. Ensure efficient and effective functioning of the team and maintain a high standard of care for the animals.
• Engage and educate the public by delivering informative keeper talks, conducting backstage pass tours, and facilitating impromptu educational sessions, fostering a deeper understanding of our animal collection and conservation efforts.
• Ensure a clean and safe environment for families to enjoy their visit to Nashville Zoo, promoting a positive and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
• Actively participate as a key member of the animal management team, coordinating schedules for park coverage, including weekends, holidays, and special events.
• Take charge of departmental operations in the absence of the curator and vice president of animal care, ensuring smooth functioning and continuity.
• Contribute as a member of the Nashville Zoo’s emergency response team, fulfilling Manager on Duty schedules and actively participating in training and drills.
• Conduct annual evaluations and provide support to staff members in goal setting, fostering their professional growth and development.
• Perform related tasks and duties as assigned.

Education/Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of full-time, paid experience with either hoofstock and/or in kind species.

Applicants are preferred to have a college degree (Associate’s or Bachelor’s) in an applicable field: Animal Science, Biology, Zoology, etc. or preferred years of experience.

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirement & Work Environment
Must be able to work outside year-round, under typical Tennessee weather conditions and temperatures for extended periods of time. Must be able to work in uneven terrain with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, and allergens. Must be able to move about on slippery surfaces, handle potentially toxic and hazardous materials and work in cramped and confined spaces. Must be able to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds. Position is subject to animal bites, scratches.

Work Schedule
Full-Time: Any combination of 5 work days in a week including weekends.
