WHAT YOU’LL DO
Under the direction of a Dean or assigned supervisor; oversee students learning and practicing skills in animal training, care, handling and management in a complex instructional live classroom at the Teaching Zoo; tutor, remediate and provide instructional assistance to students; provide assistance to faculty, perform technical work to maintain the zoo classroom and the animal population.

There is currently one full-time (12 months/year, 40 hours/week) vacancy located at Moorpark College.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district-wide, current and upcoming, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.

Representative Duties
Oversee and provide instructional assistance to students in the care, handling, training, and performing with animals in the Zoo classroom. E

Assist faculty with student learning outcomes; tutor and remediate students in the Zoo classroom, provide skills practice and enhancement of student’s classroom experience. E

Assist in the administration of class assignments; observe, track, document, and report student progress; assign and maintain records of students in skills lab, internships, and student learning lab. E

Prepare and set up the Teaching Zoo classroom equipment, tools, supplies and other teaching aids for demonstrations, practical examinations and student assignments in the training, management, care and handling of animals. E

Assist in the maintenance of the Teaching Zoo and other assigned areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition; encourage awareness of and oversee the proper use of the facilities and safe practices within the Zoo. E

Assist in the maintenance of the Zoo inventory, including animal nutrition, training and veterinary supplies, and equipment; prepare and track requisitions and purchase orders; order, receive and arrange for proper storage and handling of food, supplies and equipment for the animal population; provide classroom materials from local terrain or stores; inventory materials and assure adequate quantities are available for the care of the animal population and instructional use; monitor supply budget. E

Assist in the coordination of the overall maintenance and repair of the classroom equipment with the Maintenance Department; test, adjust, maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment; send equipment out for major repairs. E

Assist students in assuring the proper record keeping, care, and feeding of the animal population. E

Assist in the coordination, scheduling, and guidance of students during zoo and outreach activities. E

Maintain a variety of files and records regarding instructional materials, the Teaching Zoo facility, classroom equipment and supplies, and equipment repairs; organize, prepare and maintain classroom procedure manuals; perform general clerical duties as needed. E

Screen, select, train and provide work direction for student workers. E

Use and operate a variety of technical equipment. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

E = Essential Duties

Minimum Qualifications
Associate Degree in Exotic Animal Training and Management, Animal Science or related field and two years of increasingly responsible experience in the care, handling, and training of exotic animals. Experience working with students in an organized setting.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (T&E) EVALUATION:

A T&E is an assessment of training and experience, beyond the minimum requirements, that has prepared the candidate for the position as evidenced in the application materials. When completing the application and the supplemental questionnaire (if applicable), outline in detail your education, training (such as classes, seminars, workshops), and experience. Please be sure to answer every component of each supplemental question as your responses will be scored and serve as your score on the training and experience (T&E) evaluation.

The top candidates with the highest passing scores on the T&E will be invited to the Technical Interview.

TECHNICAL INTERVIEW DATE RANGE AND LOCATION: Date Range: Thursday, August 17, 2023 – Wednesday, August 23, 2023Location: The Technical Interview will be conducted remotely, using Zoom. In order to participate in the interview, you must have access to a computer with a camera, microphone, speakers, and a reliable connection to the internet.

ELIGIBILITY LIST: Upon completion of the examination, the eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran’s credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list. Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for up to one year from the date of the technical interview. PROBATIONARY PERIOD: All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion, with certain exceptions, shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service, whichever is longer. Classified management, police, and designated executive classifications shall be probationary for a period of one (1) year of paid service from initial appointment or promotion.
