Description

The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a CEO & Executive Director as well as a senior management team. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

POSITION SUMMARY: Coordinates and supervises the employees within Primate Section and manages the animal collection within the Section by performing the following duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Schedules and supervises the section’s staff.
2. Coordinates veterinary procedures within the section.
3. Coordinates maintenance and horticultural work within the section.
4. Prepares and maintains reports and records pertaining to the collection and sectional programs.
5. Maintains and improves animal husbandry standards within the section.
6. Ensures compliance with USDA, CAL-OSHA and other regulations and programs, including meetings and record keeping.
7. Plans and implements special projects, minor renovations, and improvements in the section.
8. Performs staff work as required.
9. Coordinates and works with other departments to develop educational programs, publicity, graphics, and other support services for the Section.
10. Participates in staff planning and implementation of activities in public relations, membership, development, and education.
11. Interacts with Zoo visitors courteously and offers proper attention at all times.

EXPERIENCE: The conditions listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Communication
• Proficient in the use of a computer. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to correspond electronically.
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate conversations and make it comfortable for people to share ideas and information through the application of strong interpersonal communication and listening skills.
Animal Husbandry
• Eight years of paid experience working with animals in a zoological setting.
• Minimum five years’ experience in the daily care and maintenance of non-human primates.
• Demonstrated knowledge of quality animal management, including animal husbandry, animal behavior, mixed species introductions, operant conditioning, natural history, knowledge of USDA regulations, and safe work practices.
Leadership
• Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities.
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.

EDUCATION: A degree in Animal Science or related field is preferred or equivalent, relevant experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Management and supervisory experience.

Salary Range: $72,000-$80,000
