Description

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, the keeper may be assigned to work across several sections of the zo to assist and take the lead in the care of zoo animals. Keepers will be required to work a schedule across a 7-day week, including weekends and holidays, and perform highly physical work on a daily basis.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Oversee and provide for the care of zoo animals. Involves: Prepare regular and special diets to feed animals. Feed and water animals

Clean, disinfect and maintain cages, enclosures and exhibit areas as needed

Maintain safety of animals. Monitor animal health and well-being. Report animal illness or injury to appropriate staff

Assist veterinary staff as needed with administering medications, providing treatment and restraining

Provide care for animals by trimming beaks, nails and wing feathers, providing moisture for turtles, reptiles, birds, shearing sheep, weighing animals and other care services as needed

Record animal information such as temperature and consumption to charts

Perform special projects and activities as assigned

Assist with behavior modification and enrichment programs for animals

Utilize system of rewards to condition animal to do things on command

Provide assistance to other zoo staff and to the public, including but not limited to: assisting with general maintenance and upkeep tasks, preparing work orders that need completed, assist with grounds and landscaping maintenance and construction, perform all duties associated with maintain clean water, shelter and other critical protocols associated with animal care

Warmly greet and politely answer visitors’ questions

Serve as designated lead worker which includes, but is not limited to: training and supervising new staff members, creating work schedule and assign tasks when needed

Education and Pre-requisites

Bachelor’s degree in related field OR at least 3 years experience in working at a zoo
Knowledge of exhibit display, design, construction and horticultural enhancement
Proficient skills in developing and executing animal enrichment and conditioning techniques
Demonstrate how to properly handle and restrain animals
Posses knowledge on how to properly plan and create nutritionally balanced diets
Leadership and organizational skills
Team player
Hold a valid driver’s license
Pass a background check
Be able to lift heavy object
