Description
The Utica Zoo offers full-time (40 hrs/week) Animal Care Department Internships during the summer season each year. The internship lasts approximately 9 weeks (May 26th-August 7th). Interns will work under the direct supervision of the animal care staff and assist in all aspects of their daily activities.
This is a VERY hands on internship. Interns gain experience with cleaning, feeding, record keeping, behavioral husbandry, diet preparation, exhibit maintenance, education programming and observation of veterinary procedures. Interns also gain experience following established protocols and policies related to the care of animals in a professional zoological setting. Interns will be required to conduct short presentations to the public daily. Intern positions are available in a number of specialized areas within the zoo. Education and Pre-requisites
Prospective candidates should be enrolled in or have recently completed a biology-based university program.
Must have a negative tuberculin skin test prior and recent tetanus vaccination.
Must have own transportation.
Compensation and benefits
The internship is unpaid. Housing may be available through a local university for a fee. The fee is set by the university and is nonnegotiable.
