Description

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum located near Tucson, Arizona is looking for a highly motivated, personable individual with strong leadership skills and innovative ideas to become part of the Interpretive Animal Collection team.

The IAC keeper will be responsible for the daily care of about 70 animals representing 35 species of reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and smaller mammals. Job duties include preparing animal diets; administering medication as needed, record keeping, performing minor maintenance tasks for animal enclosures and holding areas; conducting both formal and informal presentations to the general public, capture and restraint, basic husbandry, and behavioral enrichment.

This position may supervise and/or provide direction to volunteers assisting with keeper duties.

Education and Pre-requisites

The candidate must be team oriented, sensitive and courteous. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal and public speaking skills as well as a strong background in captive animal care and operant conditioning. The candidate must have the ability to perform physical work (including lifting objects up to 50 lbs.) under all types of climatic conditions. Knowledge of the natural history of Sonoran Desert region is preferred. An Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and at least two years’ work experience (preferably paid) in an AZA-accredited facility is required. The work schedule includes weekdays, weekends and holidays as assigned.

Compensation and benefits

Bargaining Unit Position. Initial Step: $15.16/hour for the first year.
