Description

Manage and maintain Fontenelle Forest’s Raptor Recovery captive education and display raptors, including care and management, operant conditioning, training handlers, and record keeping; and comply and assist with maintaining federal and state migratory bird education and possession permits.

Primary Duties
• Perform operant conditioning with captive education and display raptors
• For captive education and display raptors per established protocols
(1) Obtain food; prepare food, and feed
(2) Medicate and perform minor treatment; seek professional treatment for maladies as needed
(3) Clean/disinfect raptor living quarters
• Document care/feeding, conditioning, and handling of raptors as required by established protocols
• Obtain and maintain supplies for
(1) Raptor care and handling
(2) Raptor Woodland Refuge mews
• Using best practices for education raptor handling to demonstrate operant conditioning and develop and conduct handler trainings.
• Revise protocols as needed

Secondary Duties
Train others to perform feeding and cleaning tasks; evaluate their work
• Conduct educational programs with captive raptors
• When needed, assist with raptor rehabilitation duties at the rehabilitation center near Elmwood, NE
(1) Cleaning
(2) Preparing raptor food
(3) Transporting raptors
(4) Record keeping
• Occasional travel to obtain supplies, transport raptors, and conduct education programs
• Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Pre-requisites

Skills and Abilities

Proven ability to handle raptors safely and respectfully
• Familiarity with, and understanding of, federal and state migratory bird permit requirements
• High competency with computer processes
• Smart phone with texting and email capability
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Attention to detail
Experience and Education

• Bachelors of Science degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Veterinary Science or related field
• Minimum of three years of experience in handling, caring for, and performing operant conditioning with raptors
• Minimum of three years of experience in handling raptors in an educational setting
• Preferred: experience working with native Nebraska raptors
• Preferred: experience working with eagles

Compensation and benefits

Full -time
$13.00 – $16.85 per hour
