Description

The Tennessee Aquarium builds environmental awareness in people of all ages to help them better understand their connections to the world around us. As a part of our ongoing attempt to educate and entertain, we are excited to expand our exhibits to include lemurs.

We are searching for an experienced professional to assist with the husbandry, exhibition, programming, and training of lemurs, as well as the care and programming of other mammals and birds.

The anticipated start date for this position is April 1, 2016.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
• Daily care, feeding, enrichment and training of lemurs including effective training for routine husbandry procedures, health assessments and programming
• Maintenance of the lemur exhibit and backup enclosures
• Proactively and routinely engages Aquarium visitors with educational messages about our animals and mission through both formal and informal programs
• Stays current with all appropriate animal records
• Participates in the care of, training and programming with other mammals and birds
• As part of the team, develops new programs
• Develops and maintains appropriate professional ties with colleagues in other institutions and participates in conservation programs such as AZA SSP plans, regional workshops, etc.
• Constructively works with other Aquarium departments as appropriate
• Performs work in a manner that fosters the Aquarium’s mission and reflects its core values and service standards

Education and Pre-requisites

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
• Knowledge, skill and experience in caring for lemurs
• Experience and demonstrated skill and ability in animal training, especially lemurs, through operant conditioning
• Knowledge and experience to make effective, independent, decisions regarding care and welfare of lemurs and other small mammals
• Excellent public speaking skills and stage presence while working with animals and performing for the public
• Good communication skills and the ability to work as a team player
• Ability to perform to a high standard with tight and demanding time schedules

Required education and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field preferred; the equivalent to a degree in experience may suffice
• Minimum of two years experience in the care of lemurs
