Description
Zoo Operations Manager at SVAP is responsible for:
• Carries out all aspects of daily care to animals and their habitats. Including, but not limited to cleaning, feeding, watering, securing, exhibit maintenance, and general appearance of zoo facilities.
• Monitors health of animals on a daily basis by observing eating habits, general activity, behavior and appearance, interaction with others, etc.
• Administers prescribed medications, supplements, or treatments under the guidance of the veterinary and executive staff.
• Monitors and reports animal health and behavioral issues to executive staff
• Maintains clean, safe and organized exhibits, holding areas, service areas and equipment.
• Cleans and maintains animal exhibits including use of chemical agents and special tools which are used to ensure the health and safety of the animals as well as the proper presentation to the public.
• Maintains animal exhibits for all species.
• Oversees delivery of educational programs and/ or other public interactions. Must be comfortable speaking in front of groups, and displays excellent customer service skills.
• Prepares and distributes animal diets and adjusts as needed.
• Will oversee work activities and/or provide training for interns, seasonal staff, or volunteers.
• Designs, executes, and distributes a variety of enrichment on a daily basis to the zoo animals.
• Able to understand and carry out a variety of specific care instructions particular to each animal.
• Maintains clean and safe work environment.
• Maintains accurate heath/diet records and more.
• Identifies potential maintenance or safety issues and reports them to a supervisor.
• Adheres to established animal handling and related safety guidelines. Leads established animal escape drills and procedures. Under supervision, captures, restrains, and transports animals
• Exhibits good teamwork and communication skills both within the home team and when working with other teams and departments
• Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Pre-requisites
• Minimum of 1 year experience with multiple species, performing animal care activities in a small park or zoo environment is mandatory or a combination of education and experience will be considered.
• Strong interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills.
• Knowledge of general husbandry practices and methods is mandatory.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Knowledge of animal behavior and natural history; common environmental enrichment and animal training practices; biology and related subjects are mandatory.
• Knowledge of animal behavior as an indication of general health, reproductive potential and wellbeing is mandatory.
• Ability to recognize occupational hazards involved and the safe work practices to employ while in proximity of potentially dangerous animals.
• Should have knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment used in cleaning operations.
• Ability to keep comprehensive and accurate records according to established procedures.
• Ability to both give and follow oral and written directions effectively.
• Ability to organize tasks and time to ensure timely completion of all projects.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work in any of the assigned animal areas fulfilling all requirements of the title.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing animal behavior problems or emergency situations, and to respond with appropriate action.
• Experienced with and comfortable around potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species.
• Ability to interact courteously, respectfully and productively with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, zoo visitors and general public.

Full Time Year Round Position
Health Benefits (Medical, Dental and Vision – Post 90 days)
Vacation Benefits (1 week after one year, 2 weeks after 2 years)
