Description
Bear River Ranch offers 4 1/2 month internships, working hands-on with over 100 species of exotic and domestic animal, including; mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. This internship is designed to help interns gain experience in animal care and husbandry. Interns work side by side with our animal care team and are involved in all aspects of caring for the animals at Bear River Ranch. Animal care is hard work. You will get dirty and smelly and work in all kinds of weather conditions. But if you work hard, you will be able to gain enormous amounts of knowledge and hands-on experience that will take you to the next step in your animal welfare career.

Bear River Ranch
Bear River Ranch is a 350 acre summer camp facility, near Rolla, Missouri. The Ranch has a capacity to sleep 350 people, with over 30 building including 15 cabins, 20 activity pavilions, an archery and riflery range, a ropes course, swimming pool, pottery and ceramics studio and its own zoo. The Ranch is home to over 300 animals of more than 100 different species, and is used primarily during the summer months for a children’s summer camp called Cub Creek Science Camp. Bear River Ranch is licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture, is recognized and licensed as an Animal Rescue by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and licensed as a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Our Animals
Bear River Ranch is home to a wide variety of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. Among our animals are camel, zebu, miniature and full size horses, goats, sheep, pot bellied pigs, wallabies, lemurs, lynx, civet, porcupine, armadillo, sloth, ferret, guinea pigs, rabbits, kinkajou, dogs, cats, macaw, parrots, cockatiels, parakeets, a variety of lizards and snakes and even tarantulas, giant hissing cockroaches and scorpion (to name a few)
Education and Pre-requisites
• Must be able to articulate the benefits that this internship will have on your future plans and goals.
• Be in good physical condition; able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. (i.e. feed bags); ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain in variable environmental conditions; able to work in all weather conditions.
• Be able to show compassion and patience as well as stamina and physical strength.
Compensation and benefits
• Fully furnished on-site housing, shared with other interns; includes washer/drier and all utilities
• Use of a camp vehicle
• $75 / week stipend to cover expenses.
• Certificate of Completion and Training (Documenting 880 hours of animal care, and on-the-job training with over 100 hours in each of the following areas; animal training, animal enrichment, and veterinary care and over 100 hours of hand-on experience working with the following types of animals; horses and livestock, dogs and cats, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians and over 200 hours of hands-on experience with exotic mammals and birds)
• Job Letter – documenting and outlining tasks preformed while at BRR
