The Lincoln Children’s Zoo was established 52 years ago in 1965 and is one of the fastest growing zoos in the country. In 2019 we opened a $25 million expansion that included Sumatran Tigers, Giraffes, and Spider Monkeys. Rated among the nation’s best zoos for children by Parent Magazine, the Zoo is home to over 400 different animals and 40 endangered animals and is the third most attended arts & cultural attraction in Nebraska. Overview
Have you been applying to paid animal care jobs in the zoo industry, and getting passed on by candidates with more experience? This internship will provide you with the animal care experience you need to be more competitive in your job search. The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is currently seeking a number of individuals to fulfill a full-time internship. We have positions available in all areas of animal care within the zoo including primates, carnivores, giraffe, birds, small mammals, reptiles, animal ambassadors, nutrition, and more. The goal for this position is to help you build your resume with hands on keeper experience and job skill coaching to prepare you for a paid position in the zoological field. This position will be under the general supervision of the keepers and Animal Care Supervisor and will provide firsthand experience with husbandry, operant conditioning, enrichment, assisting with medical procedures, record keeping, guest experiences, diet preparation, and more. We will also provide career coaching and prepare you to apply for paid keeper positions within the industry.

Education and Pre-requisites

Necessary Skills:
• Ability to interact with the public in an engaging and welcoming manner
• Ability to work as an effective team member as well as function independently
• Strong communication skills
• Comfortable giving public demonstrations and tours
• Positive Attitude

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Biology or related field preferred.
• Level 1 intern: Previous unpaid animal care experience preferred.
• Level 2 intern: 150 hours of unpaid animal care experience in a zoo setting preferred.

Compensation and benefits

Unpaid internship, but furnished housing provided across the street from the zoo with a commitment of 40 hours per week for 12 weeks. Shorter duration will be considered, but no housing provided without the full commitment. We will also consider a longer duration if that is desired.
