Description

Tiger World has an Animal Care Manager position for hire starting April 1st 2015. This position will be responsible for largely a carnivore collection with also an abundance of primates, birds, and reptiles.

We are looking for a dedicated, passionate and fast learning individual with years of past experience caring for animals in a paid role. We need an independent thinker with leadership skills to administer the directives of park supervisors. With a large geriatric population coming from our rescue program we prefer candidates with a history of veterinary participation and a strong ability to read subtle animal behaviors. These attributes along with others described below are extremely important for filling this position. Tiger World is looking for a long-term employee. a) Manager duties consist of but are not limited to;
i) Daily inspections of animals and proper documentation of observations; Ex. of observations- new injuries, update on existing prognoses, maintenance in exhibit, animal body weight mass, food consumption, etc.
ii) Administration of medications, vaccines, or other health related items
iii) Communication with section leaders to follow up on animal care progress
iv) Daily communication with Directors of overall zoo and animal welfare
v) Use behavioral knowledge to properly assess animal heat cycles and pregnancies; aid in caring for infants as needed
vi) Assist Directors with facilitating the shipping and acquisition of animals, and creating/implementing new policies and procedures as needed
vii) Assist and participate with Veterinary Procedures
viii) Operant conditioning training for regular husbandry and veterinary care
ix) Maintain Veterinary Center clean and organized
x) Handling of animals, crating animals for transport and participation with Emergency Response Team
xi) Learn all Sections and fill in on regular keeper vacation and days off
xii) Participate with managing the Animal Care staff
b) Other job duties consist of but are not limited to;
i) Food preparation and supplement administration including butchering and processing of meat, cleaning food prep areas
ii) Cleaning of exhibits and implementation of enrichment
iii) Participation in educational tours, keeper talks and off site animal programs
iv) Zoo Maintenance in and around exhibits (landscaping, painting, exhibit upgrades, etc.)
v) Assist with building and construction throughout zoo

Education and Pre-requisites

a) Must have a BS degree in Biology/Zoology or related field; or equivalent combination of education, experience and training
b) MINIMUM 3 Years full-time experience in a zoological institution with some management experience
c) Work in a harmonious manner with staff, volunteers and supervisors
d) Must be honest, trustworthy and very organized
e) Independent worker who also follows instructions, as well as adhering to required established policies and procedures
f) Positive attitude and strong work ethic, arriving to work on time and willing to work late if necessary
g) Must be able to work in unfavorable weather conditions including rain, snow, extreme heat and freezing temperatures
h) Ability to do some heavy lifting of at least 50 pounds is required

Compensation and benefits

a) Salary is dependent on combination of education and experience
b) Vacation/Sick Time is accumulated at 1 day per month of employment
c) Monthly health care stipend available of $100
d) On-Site living opportunity may be available
