Description
The Birmingham Zoo is seeking a full time Animal Care Professional II Sea lions. Under the direction of the Zoological Manager of Predators/Sea Lions and the guidance of the Sea Lion ACP III, the candidate will develop husbandry and show behaviors with 1.1 California Sea Lions. In addition to animal care and training, this position will also include daily maintenance of the Sea Lion Life Support System, media events and guest interactions. The ACP II will also play a role in resolving any animal related emergencies within the zoo and will be proficient in the proper capture, restraint, crating, and transfer techniques for the animals in the Predator/Sea lion department. As part of the predator department, this position may include cross training on other routines as needed.
Education and Pre-requisites
Four years’ full time paid experience training and providing daily care for pinnipeds
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant biological field
Proven knowledge and experience in training using operant conditioning techniques
An understanding of and experience with behavioral enrichment
Current knowledge of natural history, animal behavior and husbandry
Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills
High performance in a team environment
The ability to organize and manage time
Strong decision making abilities and the ability to multi-task
Excellent public presentation skills and enthusiastic attitude
Must be able to swim and be comfortable working in and around water
Must have a current valid driver’s license with no prior traffic violations (within the last five years).
Must be First aid/CPR certified, or be willing to be certified.
Must have current negative TB test and provide documentation, or be willing to have a TB test.
