Position Overview:
CuriOdyssey is looking for an energetic, motivated, team orientated person, open to a positively changing environment to fill the position of Animal Keeper. The incumbent assists with the care and maintenance of all living animals and the wildlife habitats at CuriOdyssey. Some of the animals in the Living Collection include: River Otters, Bobcat, Badger, Raccoons, various amphibians and snakes (including Northern Pacific Rattle snakes), Raptors and more. The Animal Keeper will assist in the supervision of the apprentice, interns and wildlife aids.

Job Responsibilities Include:
1. Participation in the maintenance of the Wildlife habitats, which includes servicing habitats and indoor holding areas, as well as preparing diets and feeding animal collection.
2. Participation in veterinary procedures and assists with emergency treatment of animals.
3. Participation with the development and implementation of enrichment, animal training and handling protocols.
4. Participation in building and grounds maintenance, including cleaning / repair of exhibits, equipment and pond cleaning.
5. Assisting with the maintenance and improvement of animal husbandry standards; minor renovations, and improvements within the department.
6. Meeting with supervisors weekly to address animal health, welfare, safety, and facility maintenance.
7. Training and supervision of keeper apprentice, interns and regular volunteers as requested by supervisors.
8. Showing handleable animals in scripted shows and informal encounters.
9. Presenting information at scheduled animal feedings.
10. Interacting with museum visitors and offering information on exhibited animals.
11. Carrying out job-related tasks as requested by supervisor.

Education and Pre-requisites

Job Requirements:
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Must be at least 18 years old
3. Applicants must be in good physical condition and able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
4. A minimum of two years of captive animal experience, with 1 full year being from an AZA institution
5. A strong understanding of the methods, science, and practices of modern captive wild animal management including animal husbandry and basic animal training, and proper record keeping practices.
6. A valid driver’s license and clean driving record
7. Applicants must be willing to work outside normal business hours including weekends and holidays.
8. Applicants must be willing to work in small spaces and in all weather conditions
9. Possession of or willingness to obtain (at CuriOdyssey’s expense) vaccinations for tetanus, hepatitis B and pre-exposure rabies series.

Preferred Qualities:
1. Outgoing, personable and able to relate and work with the public.
2. Reliable, flexible and energetic
3. Interest in wildlife and the environment
4. Good written and verbal communication skills
5. A degree in biology, zoology, wildlife management or a related field is preferred.

Compensation and benefits

Salary: $19.00 per hour with benefits
