Description

Position Objective: To interview, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time staff within the Children’s Zoo, Butterfly Garden and Camel Barn, while managing the educational aspect of interpretive exhibitry and animal behavior demos. To assist in the supervision of facility operations and the day to day management of the animal staff, animal collection and exhibits
                        

Principal Responsibilities: 
Primary responsibility will be to supervise, train, and mentor seasonal staff involved with In-Park education and public interaction. This involves hiring, evaluating work performance, mentoring, and providing training to a significant number of staff members.
Work with the Education Department in implementing In-Park education programming within the Children’s Zoo and Butterfly Garden through collaborative training, messaging and interpretation with a variety of guests.
Assist in the overall daily operation of department installations, including the supervision of the activities of the keeper staff.
Assist in ascertaining, initiating, administering and reviewing protocols for animal care, keeper safety and the maintenance of equipment in the animal exhibits and associated facilities and service areas.
Assist in supervising care and maintenance of the animal collection and records.
Assist in ascertaining the needs of the animal collection and initiating food orders and work orders for environmental repairs or renovations as required.
Assist in handling, transporting and/or preparing of animals for shipment.
Assist the Supervisor, Collections Manager and Assistant Curator in coordinating the medical care needed for the animal collection following the instructions of the veterinary staff.
Assist in supervising the maintenance and construction of exhibits or support services.
Assist in Life Support System management and record keeping.
Serve as Acting Animal Supervisor in their absence.
May do research or assist in research projects, publish scientific papers and popular articles, attend professional meetings collection or study specimens in the field and give tours and lectures. May also teach courses, train personnel and consult for various governmental agencies and other institutions as required.
Enforce WCS’s rules and regulations and those of the Bronx Zoo Animal Department.
Perform related tasks and duties as required.

Education and Pre-requisites

Candidates must have either a bachelor’s degree in education or in a biological field.
Experience with program development and working with diverse audiences and knowledge of incorporating inquiry-based strategies into programming is preferred.
At least 2 years of supervisory experience is required and at least 5 years experience as a Wild Animal Keeper is preferred.
Candidates should be outgoing, creative and capable of working in a team environment.
Must be able to participate in multiple projects at once in a fast paced environment and work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
Valid, current driver’s license required.
