The Alaska Raptor Center (ARC) is the premiere avian rehabilitation hospital in Alaska. Each year the ARC admits between 200 to 300 injured and orphaned raptors and songbirds. Along with our rehabilitation birds, we also care for 24 non-releasable avian ambassador birds. Avian Care Specialists will be involved in all aspects of bird care at the ARC. This includes medical care of injured patients along with husbandry and handling of the avian ambassadors for educational programming.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Cleaning, sanitizing, feeding and basic enclosure maintenance as needed
• Diet preparation for avian ambassadors and patients, along with the processing of whole prey (including deer and bear occasionally)
• Proper restraint of raptors for medical procedures and weighing
• Assist with rescues of injured wild birds
• Monitor the birds under your care and notify supervisors of any health, nutrition or safety concerns
• Presentation of public education programs for visitors both on and off-site
• Provide engaging enrichment for avian ambassadors

Education and Pre-requisites

Education and/or experience
• Background in exotic animal husbandry preferred
• Bachelor’s degree (completed or in process) in biology, education or related field preferred
• Basic level of bird (particularly raptors) experience

Candidate should have a basic knowledge of:
• Avian behavior and husbandry
• Safety awareness when around raptors and the importance of following directions
• Working in a team environment
• Engaging and interacting with the public

Possess the ability to:
• Clean and maintain avian enclosures
• Observe and report changes in animal care or behavior to supervisors
• Work independently in the absence of immediate supervision
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Communicate clearly and concisely
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
• Make sound decisions and use good judgement
• Prioritize work activities and demonstrate effective time management
• Have a positive attitude and be excepting of last-minute changes

Other Qualifications
• Must be 18 years or older
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Have updated tetanus vaccination
• Must be willing to relocate to Alaska
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and on-call work

Compensation and benefits

• Avian Care Specialist is an hourly full-time position that includes some travel within Alaska
• Written performance evaluations will be given after the first three months, again at six months and annually thereafter
