Description
The Oasis Sanctuary is a life-care facility for captive exotic birds, particularly Parrots, Cockatoos, Macaws and other Psittacines, although we do accept other captive avian species. As a true sanctuary, we do not sell, breed or offer birds for adoption. Some of our birds are physically handicapped or challenged and require unique living or feeding situations. Others have been passed from home to home, often being physically and/or emotionally abused, and have become fearful or aggressive. We offer these birds a stable and loving home for the duration of their natural lives. With 825 birds in our care we are seeking dedicated individual(s) to provide daily care. The Oasis Sanctuary is proud to be accredited by both American Sanctuary Association (ASA) and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).
Our Animal Caregivers must have a genuine interest in birds and their well being. Caregiver’s responsibilities include the daily feeding of all animals, which includes cleaning of food bowls and areas; daily cleaning and maintenance of all cages and enclosures; monitoring of the health of all animals; general support of the daily operations in the bird areas which would include tasks such as enrichment, maintaining grounds, and special projects as needed.
Education and Pre-requisites
Bird care and handling experience a plus. Candidates must be able to perform regular, strenuous duties in all desert weather conditions. Candidates must have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds; regularly bend, reach and kneel; work in our outdoor and indoor dusty environments-allergens are heavy; handle high levels of noise; work in an environment with daily changes in climate. You will also be exposed to animal waste and potentially aggressive parrots. Mechanical or maintenance skills or vet-tech experience would be beneficial. The work is physical, dirty and often unglamorous, but can be highly rewarding. It offers the personal satisfaction of helping to provide a stable environment for birds to peacefully live out the remainder of their lives.
Position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week-scheduled 5 days on, 2 days off. Candidate must be willing to work weekends and holidays. We are seeking an individual that is extremely dependable and willing to dedicate their time and energy to the needs of the birds.
The sanctuary is located on 72 acres in a rural area of southeastern Arizona. The closest retail services are located 25 miles south in Benson. Due to our location candidates must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle capable of handling county maintained dirt roads. Candidates must be willing to live on site.
Interested applicants will be required to travel to the sanctuary and volunteer a minimum of 4 days as part of the application process. Volunteer housing is provided during this time. You would need to cover expenses for travel and food.
Compensation and benefits
Modest hourly salary starting at $8.05/hour. A performance increase is considered at 6 months of service.
Medical plan offered after 90 days of service.
On-site housing is provided-small comfortable furnished one room cabin, suitable for one person. Essential utilities are paid for by The Oasis. Non-essential utilities must be covered by employee.
