Description
Responsibilities include but are not limited to all aspects of daily animal husbandry (including behavioral husbandry), exhibit maintenance, record keeping, and engaging interactions with zoo guests through keeper chats, collection demonstrations, and VIP tours. This position could require participation with ongoing research efforts, service on institutional committees, or collaboration in program development.
Education and Pre-requisites
A trustworthy team player with excellent communication skills, eagerness to interact positively with the public and Zoo staff, effective time management skills, the ability to work various shifts in various outdoor and indoor conditions, and a passion for conservation. Preferred at least two years of experience in exotic animal care and experience with common bird breeding procedures such as incubation, hand-rearing, and cross fostering. Also, preferred is experience using modern technology for record keeping, data analysis, organization, and effective communication.
The successful candidate will have significant demonstrated experience in daily animal care working safely with a variety of exotic wildlife. Experience with behavioral husbandry, including environmental enrichment and operant conditioning are preferred. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and lift 50+ pounds frequently. Must be able to be present in areas with foul smells and harsh noises.
*Must be able to harmoniously work as a West Zone team member, and as a member of the Memphis Zoo.
*When possible, participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences aimed at improving knowledge and professional development.
*Must demonstrate computer proficiency for record keeping and daily communication.
*Ability to use power tools and carpentry skills are a plus.
*Support and implement area policies, procedures, and protocol.
*Ability to supervise interns and volunteers working within the area.
*Must be dependable and willing to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays.
*This position requires working in all kinds of weather conditions including heat, humidity, rain, and cold. It also requires physical exertion such as climbing, reaching, assuming awkward positions, repetitive motions, and lifting/moving heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to be present in areas with foul smells and harsh noises.
Education
A minimum of college-level coursework in zoology, biology or a related field is required; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred (or the equivalent combination of education and experience).
Compensation and benefits
This full-time regular position will be eligible to enroll for insurance benefits after 90 days of continuous employment and will be eligible to earn paid leave. Position may be hired as an Associate Keeper or a Zookeeper, based on the experience of the applicant.
