Description

This position is supervised by the Education Director and works closely with other members of the Education Department at the Alaska Zoo. It is a full-time, year-round position with benefits.
The following are duties listed under the heading of this position:
 Adventure Camp Program (summer and winter seasons): Develop topics, write lesson plans, procure supplies, lead camp programs, and coordinate behind-the-scenes animal encounters with husbandry staff. Coordinator will also maintain the camp registration and payment process, providing monthly tracking reports to the Education Director. Coordinator will be responsible for keeping inventory of camp supplies and restocking as needed. Coordinator will be responsible for communicating camp needs and necessary financial information as requested to the Education Director. Coordinator will assist, and in some cases lead, in advertising tasks to promote the Camp programs.
 Create-a-Camps: All duties listed above for camp program management will apply to Create-a-Camp programs. Coordinator will take an active role in developing plans for promotion of new Create-a-Camp program offerings and advertisements.
 Scout Programs: All duties listed above for camp program management will apply to Boy and Girl Scout program series. Coordinator will take an active role in developing plans for promotion of new scout program offerings. Coordinator will work with the Education Director to plan schedules (most planning occurs in summer season).
 Toddler Programs: All of the above listed duties apply to the Storytime and Sing-a-long programs, to be overseen by the Camp Coordinator and in partnership with the Distance Learning Coordinator.
 Other Education Programs: All members of the Education Department assist each other with coverage for presenting a wide range of programs. While this position will focus mainly on camps and scout programs, the Coordinator will also provide coverage for tours, outreach programs, and others as needed. Coordinator will assist with scheduling programs by fielding phone calls and email requests for programs. Coordinator will help to maintain the master schedule book and Google Calendar postings. Coordinator will forward requests for scheduling as they apply to either the Education Director or other education staff.
 Education Animals: The Coordinator will work with trained education animals for presentations in a variety of program settings and must be willing to work with birds, mammals and reptiles.
 Responsibilities: The Coordinator is expected to arrive at work on time (following a schedule agreed upon with Education Director), to dress in zoo uniform clothing during all work hours, to provide excellent customer service when dealing with requests, to answer calls and emails promptly, and to conduct his or herself in a professional manner that represents the zoo well at all times. Programs and presentations must be well-prepared and accurate in both information given and in relaying the mission of the zoo. The duties and responsibilities listed in this job description are terms of employment. Additional duties or responsibilities may be added as needed by Education Director.

Education and Pre-requisites

Candidate must be willing to handle a variety of education ambassador animals, including but not limited to reptiles, birds and mammals. Candidate must possess the ability to work well individually and as a team, and must be comfortable instructing and presenting to all age groups, especially children. Excellent communication, organization and time management skills are a must. The ability to develop science-based program activities with a creative flare is also essential.
Candidate must have a clean background and submit to a full background check, in addition to holding a valid Alaska driver’s license. Work hours will vary with some evenings, overnights and weekends required based on program schedules.

Compensation and benefits

Start date early April, and starting pay is $13/hour plus benefits
