Unity College, “America’s Environmental College,” seeks an enterprising colleague to join our Captive Wildlife Care and Education faculty for fall of 2015.
Unity College is a four-year liberal-arts college in Maine that emphasizes Sustainability Science throughout the curriculum. Faculty at Unity primarily teach and advise undergraduate students. In the Captive Wildlife Care and Education program, we prepare students for a variety of careers in wildlife husbandry and informal education. We offer unique classes that provide students with hands-on animal care skills and practice in interpretation. In addition, faculty are expected to engage students in scholarship and pursue professional development that expands student opportunity. The successful applicant will assist with program development by pursuing local and regional partnerships with animal care facilities and assist with the maintenance of our on-campus animal collection, including small exotics and domestic livestock.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
-Teaching introductory and advanced classes in the Captive Wildlife Care and Education program.
-Developing new courses for the CWCE program.
-Advising and mentoring undergraduate students seeking careers in wildlife husbandry, education, and conservation.
-Teaching related Wildlife Biology courses as appropriate, and contributing to online programming and graduate programming if desired.
-Developing projects or partnerships that expand the capacity of the CWCE program and the breadth of opportunities available to our students.
-Pursuing an active professional-development agenda and contributing to the success of the College.
Education and Pre-requisites
-A terminal degree in a relevant field for the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank. Applicants seeking an Instructor position without a terminal degree should demonstrate extensive professional experience.
-Experience working with captive animals in wildlife rehabilitation facilities, aquariums, zoos, nature centers, or museums.
-Experience providing educational programming to diverse audiences in formal or informal settings.
In addition, familiarity with any of the following will be beneficial: field work, in- or ex-situ conservation programs, parasitology, nutrition, or wildlife diseases.
All faculty are also encouraged to contribute to our Environmental Citizen general education curriculum and engage in transdisciplinary teaching with their colleagues, so a willingness to teach collaboratively in environmental studies classes is a plus.

Experiential Education: Unity is an environmentally focused academic community committed to sustainability science education that includes service-learning and field, project and community-based educational experiences. Student research, internships, field courses, independent studies and co-curricular programming all contribute to the hands on/minds on teaching and learning atmosphere at Unity College. From our new colleagues we expect exceptional teaching and visionary curricular thinking. In addition, faculty are expected to mentor students, engage with community, pursue scholarship and share in governance.
General Information: This is a salaried, 9-month academic year position eligible for the following benefits: medical; dental; employer-paid STD, LTD, Life; flexible benefits plan offering medical and dependent care reimbursement accounts; voluntary life insurance; faculty medical leave, 403(b) retirement plan. Teaching workload for faculty is up to 21 credits per year.
