Description
The Herpetology, Ichthyology and Invertebrate Zoology (HIIZ) department is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our team. The applicant must have strong knowledge and experience in husbandry specific to Ichthyology. This position is responsible for providing animal care, monitoring animal health, providing technical training of staff, and maintaining animal areas and life support systems. Knowledge of and experience with monitoring equipment, husbandry, and water chemistry is required. Life support systems experience with saltwater systems is a must. Comfort with presenting lectures to the public along with the ability to learn presentation skills and materials and knowledge of the Sonoran Desert region are desirable. The candidate will be expected to continue to seek and acquire education/knowledge in several fields. Knowledge of reptiles and invertebrate is a plus. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Also, must be a quick learner and self-starter, requiring little supervision. Must be team oriented and have a demonstrated history of being courteous, sensitive, and respectful.
Education and Pre-requisites
The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Biology or related field, and a minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in keeping, breeding, and capture/handling techniques of fishes. Previous experience with marine and freshwater fishes in a professional animal care facility (preferably an AZA accredited institution) is mandatory for this position, along with experience interacting with the public, developing and offering presentations, and working with volunteers and interns. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Valid Arizona driver’s license (or ability to obtain) and satisfactory driving record required. Compensation and benefits
Initial Step: $17.05/hour for the first year.
