Description

Position: As a key member of the senior management team, this position reports directly to the Executive Director. Primary responsibilities are: planning, implementing, managing, and controlling the financial-related activities of the organization. This position directly communicates with Zoo employees, Board members, vendors, and auditors to provide or obtain financial information and to resolve problems or issues. The Comptroller maintains vendor, bank and bond accounts as well as the internal operating accounts of the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. Work is evaluated through meetings, budget, time constraints and results achieved.
Key Responsibilities of the Comptroller
● Responsible for the accounting of the non-profit Zoo
● Improve systems and procedures and initiate corrective actions
● Prepare financial statements monthly and formulate a report for the Director and the Board
● Prepare budgets- annually and as needed for Bond reporting
● Prepare and utilize a transparent accounting system allowing for proper checks and balances
● Review all bond requirements and ensure they are being adhered to and reports budgetary items and other information to the bond holders and on EMMA when required
● Ensure that the organization maintains 501c3 status
● Perform a variety of fiscal accounting tasks including maintenance of accounts payable, accounts receivable, daily sales, donor records, accounting records, payroll, and the preparation and analysis of various financial reports
● Comply with all federal, state, and local requirements regarding payroll, bond, and not-for-profit status.
● Remain knowledgeable of changes in federal, state, and local laws that would impact operations.
● Ensure that effective internal controls are in place to ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting
● Participate in key decisions as a member of the senior management team, including attending weekly staff meetings, reviewing contracts, operational policies, benefit offerings, personnel policies, third party partner selection, endowment and sponsorship agreements and other development policies (i.e. naming) to provide input from a financial perspective
● Implement operational best practices
● Understand and mitigate key elements of the Zoo’s risk profile
● Formulate ways to improve efficiency and increase revenue

Education and Pre-requisites

● BS in Accounting, or Finance
● MBA and/or CPA highly desirable
● Proficiency in QuickBooks and Intuit required
● Eight to ten years of progressive accounting experience is required.
● Experience with non-profit entities is a plus
