Description
•Supervises and evaluates Animal Keeper staff.
•Keeps current and accurate files on each animal and serves as CALM’s Official register.
•Responds to animal related inquiries from the general public.
•Observes animals daily to assess health and/or illness and work with veterinarian as needed.
•Prepares annual USDA, USFW, and CDFG and other reports jointly with Zoo Manager.
•Maintains working relationships with other governmental agencies.
•Keeps inventory of animal foods/medicines and order as needed.
•Keeps inventory of supplies and equipment used by keepers and reports to Zoo Manager (CALM).
•Works with education animals and trains other employees in proper handling.
•Works with veterinarian or veterinary technician to schedule routine vaccinations and trimmings.
•Assists manager with education programs as needed.
•Recruit, supervise and train docents and provide oversight to animal keeper staff regarding the volunteer workforce.
Education and Pre-requisites
•Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology.
•Additional experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.
•Veterinary Tech and International Wildlife Rehabilitation Certification preferred.
•Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of zoo experience required.
•A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the supervision or management of staff required.
Compensation and benefits
$4,345 – $4,777 per month. Maximum entry level is $5,259 per month. Work schedule may include evenings and weekends. Holiday, sick leave, and vacation benefits. Prepaid medical, dental, vision, and counseling plans provided for employee and family. Prepaid life insurance policy provided for the employee. Employees of this office are not covered by Social Security, but do have mandatory retirement coverage with California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). This position is a classified management position and is overtime exempt.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Passage of a pre-employment medical assessment, current tetanus and rabies vaccination. Some positions may require proof of privately owned automobile insurance and possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license which must be maintained for the duration of the assignment. Fingerprint clearance by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met. Must present verification of completion of Child Abuse Mandated Reporter training or obtain verification within six (6) weeks of hire and annually thereafter, as required by the California Child Abuse Neglect Reporting Act. This position is overtime exempt and has a probationary period of one year.
