An Innovative Model for Science Learning:

The California Science Center offers fun and informative exhibits presented in interactive worlds: World of Life; Creative World; Ecosystems; and our upcoming exhibit dedicated to Air and Space. Through hands-on experiences in our galleries, you’ll learn about human inventions and innovations, the life processes of living things and more.

The Ecosystems gallery includes live animals and interactive exhibits, where guests immerse themselves in Earth’s ecosystems to discover how living things on our planet are interconnected with their environment.

The creative vision for Ecosystems has been established by the leaders of the California Science Center, thoughtful planning by our Curator of Ecology and the advice of industry and academic advisors. The Director of Husbandry is a key partner who ensures that the creative vision for Ecosystems is preserved and presented through the use of our living collection. The director works collaboratively with Exhibit Development, Curator, husbandry staff and our Senior Vice President of Operations, to lead his or her team of Living Collections staff.

About the Job:

You will oversee the Living Collections Department’s husbandry practices, exhibit aesthetics, 250 species and 8,000 specimen in our living collection. You will lead a diverse team of professionals and volunteers including terrestrial, aquatic, dive and boating staff. Some of the challenges you will face are associated with engaging people, budgets, boat operations, exhibit/husbandry priorities and projects. Your days will be filled with guiding the efforts of husbandry staff resources, animal health and enrichment; exhibit development; collecting, sustainable practices, inventory, equipment, and materials for the living collection.

•Overseeing the appropriate collection, care and management of all Living Collections animals through leadership and supervision of Husbandry and Dive staff.

•Fulfilling the educational goals of the Living Collections department by working closely with Curator, Educators, Life Support and others to develop exhibits and programs.

•Providing a high-level of communication with partners and staff to foster team environment in pursuing vision and departmental goals.

•Serving as an active and contributing member of special teams, committees and the California Science Center Diving Control Board.

To Get Your Foot in the Door, You Need to Bring this to the Table:

•Bachelors or advanced degree in Biology, Zoology, Marine Science, or related field.

•5 + years of managerial experience requiring a high-level of communication at an AZA accredited zoo or aquarium type facility.

•10 + years in Husbandry role with ability to manage terrestrial, insect and aquatic species, their collection, habitats, and displaying captive animal exhibits, meeting educational goals to preserve Ecosystems vision.

•Knowledge, skills and abilities associated with directing the husbandry and exhibition of both terrestrial and aquatic species utilizing modern principles and practices guided by AZA standards and industry best practices.

•Knowledge, skills and abilities associated with strategic planning, staff management, budget preparation and control, and adherence to all applicable laws and regulations governing the collection and exhibition of animals in captivity.

•Ability to dive; and certified AAUS diver (preferred), with diving experience including tank diving, open-ocean diving, collecting and marine scientific diving.

•Knowledge of Pacific Coast marine life and species of an Asian Rainforest, Sonoran Desert and native California species critical.

•Occasional out-of-State travel; Local travel required to perform boating operations, captaining boat, dives, collections and outreach.
