LEO Zoological Conservation Center, is a nonprofit, off-exhibit breeding facility. We are located in Greenwich, CT, just an hour outside of New York City. The facility offers our animals a low impact, stress-free environment and we propagate for accredited zoological institutions. We are closed to the public but allow a limited number of visits seasonally, split between Special Cause Groups and donors. www.LEOzoo.org

LEO Zoological Conservation Center is seeking a motivated individual to pilot our outreach/education program. This position is responsible for facilitating the year round implementation of the on-site, as well as the upstart of our Zoo Mobile education program. You will help foster a sense of environmental stewardship in the next generation!

Essential job functions include the development of program themes, outcomes, messages and scripts that inspire the diverse audiences to build empathy and caring for wildlife and their wild places.

This position requires:
• A cheerful, outgoing nature, a high energy level, a positive attitude, and the ability to work as an effective team member, as well as, function independently.
• The knowledge of conservation, natural history, biology or zoology, natural ecosystems, and conservation issues. The knowledge of principles and understanding of the process of learning and teaching. A love and appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors.
• Ability to adapt quickly and be flexible in any scenario, as well as considerable patience. Lead and supervise program participants including groups of children and adults on a daily basis.
Responsibilities include:
• Developing, coordinating, instructing, and implementing dynamic education programs, events, and activities including classes, presentations and other educational programs for all grade levels with cross-curriculum components in accordance to STEM education.
• Animal care of educational animal ambassador collection including but not limited to diet, habitat/enclosure maintenance, behavioral enrichment, conditioning training, and assist in safe captures, restraint, transport and veterinary procedures. Position also includes the daily upkeep of animal logs and administering medications. Will also be asked to supervise and train education interns.
• Proper handling and transport, and training of the education animal ambassador collection. Position will be required to handle a wide variety of small and medium sized animals including birds, mammals, and reptiles. Experience in handling a variety of animal species and utilizing operant conditioning and positive reinforcement training is a required.
• Establishing and maintaining communication with teachers and informal educators, students, volunteers, and visitors in all types of programming and special events.
• Prepare program attendance reports, master calendar listings and routine correspondence
• Other responsibilities may be designated

Education and Pre-requisites

A Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in life sciences, zoo keeping, animal psychology or similar, related field is a must. Previous public speaking and/or teaching experience to a variety of groups ranging in all sizes and age levels is a preferred.

Our program requires that we meet or exceed USDA standards for care, handling and transportation. This individual must be familiar with and be able to carry out those requirements
