Keeper III
Tigers for Tomorrow is a wild animal preserve and environmental center located an hour from Birmingham. This an entry level keeper position for someone with one full year , ( Intern experience accepted) of experience with emphasis on predatory animals. Keeper will need to excel in farm animal, equines and hoof stock husbandry as well as small mammals and bears. This is a full-time, year round position that will assist in caring for over 150 animals the preserve is home to.
Knowledge of: animal behavior and care; feeding and handling (including manual restraint) of domestic and non domestic varieties of animals; Building, maintenance and repair of zoo facilities, grounds and equipment; elementary animal first aid; common varieties of wild and domestic animals found in zoo environments; record keeping. Ability to: perform routine zoo keeping and other maintenance work which may require manual work requiring physical strength, ability and stamina; withstand unpleasant working conditions associated with the care, feeding and handling of animals and the cleaning of living areas of animals; must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions including food preparation formulas, feeding schedules and medical treatments/prescriptions; understand and apply safety precautions pertaining to the feeding and handling of exotic animals and carnivores; deal tactfully and effectively with the general public, supervisors and co-workers,
Education and Pre-requisites
A bachelor degree in a related field, or hands on experience may be substituted. One year full-time, paid experience in the care of barnyard, hoof stock equine and other wild animals. Internships not accepted as paid experience. Should be out going and personable with some experience working with the public. Must be able to communicate very well and follow protocol.
Must be willing and able to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends and holidays as needed; must be willing and able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and sometimes unpleasant environmental conditions.
Compensation and benefits
Salary starts between $23,500 and $25,000. First review after 90 days and then every six months. PTO accrued monthly after 90 day probation.
