Description
The Erie Zoo is looking for hardworking, self-motivated and experienced animal care staff to fill multiple positions. Our park is approximately 15 acres and home to a wide variety of species, including numerous Endangered Species. We currently participate in multiple SSP’s and SAFE programs. The zoo is investing in multiple capital projects over the next five years with a focus on exhibit design and upgrades. As part of our ongoing Strategic Planning process, we are dedicated to continued growth in conservation, enhancing our visitor experience and providing a positive and rewarding workplace for our employees.
Ideal candidates will value professionalism, open communication and attention to detail. Successful candidates should take pride in their work and in all the animals under their care. Candidates should expect to work independently and within a small team as needed. Creativity and adaptability are encouraged.
Each position will be responsible to carry out all aspects of daily animal care and husbandry for the animals. These positions will care for a variety of species, including small carnivores, reptiles, birds, large hoofstock and small primates. Experience with these species is preferred. The specific assigned area will be determined based on the needs of the zoo and on the species/animal experience of the candidates.
Daily duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Cleaning and maintenance of buildings and exhibits
• Diet preparation, feeding prescribed diets, monitoring and reporting diet consumption
• Enrichment presentation
• Operant conditioning training
• Observations
• Medical treatments and assisting in medical procedures
• Responding to emergency situations
• Keeper talks
• Daily written and verbal communication with the Curator
Physical requirements include frequent walking and standing, frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, reaching, bending, kneeling, twisting and climbing. The work environment is indoors and outdoors and in inclement weather. Operation of a variety of equipment, vehicles and power tools is required. Applicants must pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, physical and annual TB test.
Applicants must be able to work weekdays, weekends, holidays and some overtime as needed.
Education and Pre-requisites
A college degree in biological sciences or a related field is preferred, but not required. A minimum of two years’ paid experience in a zoo setting is required.

• Starting rate of $11.50 – $14.50 p/hr (range may be adjusted based on prior experience)
