Description
The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, the fifth oldest zoo in America, is accepting applications for the position of General Curator. The General Curator will oversee and participate in the care of animals representing over 80 species, support policies and protocols reflecting AZA standards, and guide ten animal care staff members.
The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, while not currently AZA accredited, continues to strive to meet all AZA standards. The General Curator will be an integral team member in the upcoming re-accreditation process. With a 20 year master plan to be released this Spring, the Binghamton Zoo is looking ahead. Education and Pre-requisites
Qualifications:
• Minimum 3 years supervisory experience with the ability to support a team of 10+ staff
• Must possess a degree in zoology, biology or related field
• Must have or be willing to obtain a NYS driver’s license
• Position requires flexible hours, including weekends, holidays and evenings
Essential Responsibilities/Skills (include but not limited to):
• Act as liason to Executive Director and other zoo departments
• Must be able to work effectively as part of a team
• Knowledge of AZA accreditation, principles, ethics and practices
• Proven history of animal enrichment, exhibition, and husbandry in a variety of collections
• Must have the ability to prioritize issues affecting staff and animals
• Maintenance of all local, state and federal permits
• Experience in the use of immobilization and restraint equipment
• Attention to detail
• Research, development and updating of the Institution Collection Plan
• Participation in facility Safety Committee
Compensation and benefits
Salary commensurate with experience. This is an exempt position with full benefits.
