Description

The Buffalo Zoo is looking for a Grounds Keeper I with a primary focus on janitorial duties and operating grounds equipment.

• Primary focus will be janitorial duties and seasonal equipment operation (i.e. lawn mowers, leaf blowers, tractors, snow plows, etc.)
• Maintains existing landscaping, indoor and outdoor exhibit work and assists in the development of new landscaping, including planting, weeding, tree pruning, lawn mowing, and raking.
• Maintains the year-round cleanliness of all paved surfaces and landings including snow removal and salting.
• Assists with set-ups and breakdowns for promotions and/or special events.
• Responds to visitor questions or concerns promptly and efficiently in a manner conducive to promoting a positive guest experience.
• Routinely cleans interior of buildings and restrooms as well as providing trash and litter pickup throughout the grounds.
• Performs pre-start maintenance checks on vehicles and power equipment to ensure safe operation and reports deficiencies according to established procedure.
• Must be able to operate all lawn/garden equipment, tractors, skid loaders, snowplows, etc.
• Essential Functions for Zoo School Building – Opens the Zoo school before the school day and secures facility at the close of the school day; completes the janitorial and housekeeping tasks necessary to daily operation of Zoo facility including classrooms, stairwells, restrooms, kitchens, offices; conducts periodic thorough cleaning of entire Zoo School facility utilizing commercial equipment where necessary during extended school breaks.
• Must have a valid NYS Driver’s License (non-CDLC or CDL class) and have an average or better driving record based on the evaluation process of our insurance company.
• TB Test Conducted Annually.
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays as necessary.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Grounds Manager and/or Director of Facilities and Construction.

Education and Pre-requisites

Requirements:
• Minimum Education – High School Diploma.
• Minimum Experience – basic grounds maintenance duties including lawn mowing, weed trimming, janitorial tasks, and snow removal, preferred. Horticultural knowledge is a plus.

Physical Demands:
• Able and willing to perform sustained work of a physical nature, that may require heavy lifting.
• A fitness for duty test will be required in order for the successful candidate to be given further consideration for the position.

Compensation and benefits

Benefits:
Benefits available include health plan, life insurance, dental, vision, 403B pension plan, annual leave time, holiday time, and sick time benefits. Benefits are available after the successful completion of a probationary period of 60 days of work.
This is a full-time CSEA Non-Exempt Union hourly position. Starting pay will be $16.18 per hour which is 85% of full rate ($19.04) during probation.
