Description

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is announcing the immediate opening of a full-time, hourly, benefitted position on the Ambassador Animal Team, responsible for the care of more than 35 different ambassador species, providing animals and animal trainers for on-site programs and educational outreach throughout the beautiful state of Utah.

The Ambassador Team consists of (2) areas- The Animal Resource Center, a large multi-room building dedicated to small mammal, raptor, herp and invertebrate housing. Creekside is an interactive exhibit connecting children to nature through outdoor activities. The facility consists of a small presentation theater as well as additional indoor and outdoor animal housing.

You: have progressive knowledge and experience in AZA ambassador programming who exhibits joyous enthusiasm, professionalism, initiative, competence, a love of creativity and are an engaged professional who wants to jump in, explore and contribute. Applicant must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions, in close proximity to visitors, be able to lift over 60 pounds without injury, bend, stoop, jump, and stretch. A good driving record is required.

Education and Pre-requisites

Applicants must be able to work effectively in a positive team environment, equally with guests and an integrated animal handling team including Animal Care, Education and Volunteers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary. At least two years paid experience in a zoo setting working with a wide variety of taxa is required. There is a strong expectation of experience in operant conditioning and training techniques preferably with ambassador taxa, providing enrichment, and public speaking. This position will be responsible for assisting with organizing many facets of new and developing ambassador programs, including but not limited to operant conditioning, high standards of care and welfare, and procedural development. A degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field is preferred. The position will also be trained to work in other animal areas of the Zoo.
