Description

Tanganyika Wildlife Park is currently accepting applications from hard working, dependable college students and recent graduates to participate in a keeper internship within our animal department. This is a paid internship. Interns will gain experience working with rare and endangered species including birds, reptiles, carnivores, hoofstock, and small and large mammals by working one-on-one with keepers in a variety of ways, detailed below:

Maintaining and cleaning animal enclosures and yards.

Exhibit maintenance

Diet preparations and feeding

Creating and distributing animal enrichment

Animal training

Assisting with animal rides

Informal and formal guest interactions through keeper talks, demonstrations, animal ambassador encounters, etc.

Education and Pre-requisites

Prospective Interns must be at least 18 years of age before the start of their internship.

Preference will be given to college students working towards a degree or those that have a degree in zoo science, wildlife biology, zoology, or other related field.

Excellent public speaking and customer service skills.

Interns must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Interns should be able to stand, sit, or walk and be able to perform physical work outside in varied weather conditions for up to 8 hours a day.

Interns should be able to bend, stoop, and lift 50 to 75 pounds when necessary.

Interns are required to work with the keeper(s) of their area to create and assess an original enrichment device.

Keeper Interns are desired for either 16 week terms:
March through June or
June through September or
10 week term June through August

Preference will be given to 16-week applicants.

The number of hours required per week will very, but Interns should expect to work at least 30 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. (Please indicate which session you are applying for, unless available for any time period)

Compensation and benefits

This is a paid position, currently paying $7.25/hr.

Housing is NOT provided.
