Description

This position performs a variety of general and facility maintenance duties pertaining to the overall operation and cleanliness of the building under the direction and guidance of the Zoo Director. On-site training will be provided. This position requires staff to work a non-traditional 40 hour work week upon hire throughout the end of October before being laid off for the season. Qualified candidates will be required to work into the late evening and weekend hours during our peak season and must pass a background check and drug screening.

Education and Pre-requisites

• Must possess previous work experience as a maintenance worker in general areas of maintenance operations and possess knowledge and have experience in operation of motorized and non-motorized equipment. (i.e., carpentry, welding, electrical, mowing, use of power tools etc.)

• Must possess valid Illinois Driver’s License and Class C Driving License and be insurable under District Liability Insurance.

• Must be able to read and comprehend relevant policies, operational procedures, safety guidelines or other guidelines of Maintenance operations.

• Must be able to perform simple math and measurement calculations, long hand and with available calculators or other devices in performance of duties and responsibilities.

• At direction of the Zoo Director, may be required to train, test, obtain and maintain pesticide Operator’s license in accordance with Department of Agriculture rules and regulations.
General Requirements:
• Must be able to read and write and have good command of the English language.
• Good oral and written communication.
• Physical capabilities – lifts 50 pounds, squat, bend and move as necessary for the job.
• Must be able to perform basic mathematics.
• Must have basic proficiency of Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Must possess valid Illinois Driver’s License.
• Must possess professional phone skills and work well with the public.
• Must present a neat and professional appearance.
• Responsible to follow policies and procedures outlined in Springfield Park District employee manual.
• Must live in Sangamon County, in the State of Illinois or must be willing to move to Sangamon County in the State of Illinois within the first 6 months of acceptance of a position with the Springfield Park District.

Duties:

At the direction of the Zoo Director, the tasks and duties required to successfully fill this position may include, but not be limited to:
• Mowing, weeding, landscaping areas; watering seasonal plants throughout the zoo.
• Trash pick-up and removal.
• Regular and thorough cleaning of facility restrooms to include all surfaces (i.e. toilets, floors, doors, handles, trash receptacles, mirrors etc.)
• Regular cleaning of windows.
• Regular sweeping and mopping of all hard surface floors in the facility; use appropriate signage where required to alert guests when floors are wet. Follow OSHA guidelines.
• Setting up for special events and meetings.
• Assisting in facility maintenance including painting, vacuuming, spot cleaning carpets etc.
• Safe operation of golf carts, and Park District Vehicles as assigned.
• Watering and trimming indoor and outdoor plants.
• Assisting Maintenance personnel with special projects as directed.
• Assisting customers during special events and rentals.
• Greeting all guests and park goers with a friendly demeanor.
• Wear safe work shoes and Springfield Park District Henson Robinson Zoo uniform shirt.
• Cleaning out tobacco receptacles.
• Placing recyclable products in proper receptacles.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment for guests and staff.
