Description
Essential Functions:
1. Train and lead volunteers; hold to the highest standards of animal care and organizational management
2. Work in unison with the President of the Board of Directors, who serves as direct Supervisor, as well as the rest of the Board of Directors.
3. Plan and direct feeding and watering of animals in and around existing animals quarters
4. Coordinate with veterinarians and Lead Volunteers in the administration of medications, dietary supplements, or other treatments
5. Understand and maintain adherence to USDA and TPW standards
6. Hold volunteers accountable for designated assignments & projects
7. Coordinate and participate in capture/restraint of animals for examination or treatment as needed
8. Clean and inspect animal quarters
9. Verify and inspect work of volunteers on a daily basis
10. Perform routine maintenance of areas, as needed
11. Ensure safe animal holding by performing daily area inspections of both holding and exhibits
12. Conduct animal enrichment and training
13. Develop and assign work schedule to volunteers in assigned areas
14. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
15. Assist in volunteer and Board relations. Maintain proper paperwork as needed.
16. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures
17. Record feeding, health, and other pertinent data on individual animals
18. Report unusual animal behaviors, animal conditions, or unusual occurrences to Supervisor
19. Report and document accidents, injuries, and health hazards to Supervisor
20. Report/document equipment breakdowns and/or damage
21. Participate in continuing education, as requested
22. Interact with guests in the form of both formal and informal talks
23. Participate in the regular disaster and hazard drills
Education and Pre-requisites
-Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in the fields of Zoology, Biology, Ecology, or Management.
-Two years organized animal care experience, required.
-Carnivore experience a plus
-Work with a sanctuary (especially GFAS) or AZA accredited facility a plus
-Two years of supervisory or management experience, preferred.
-Non-profit experience a plus
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-Excellent powers of observation
Strong verbal and written communication skills
-Must be an enthusiastic self-starter and team player
Compensation and benefits
Salary begins at 28,080, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
