Currently the Toledo Zoo is seeking a Night Keeper. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide assistance with projects in the mammal, elephant, bird, aquarium, Herpetology and animal health and nutrition departments.
Night Keeper responsibilities include:
• Present animal exhibits and provide guests with a comfortable, safe, fun and educational experience for the Snooze program. This includes giving accurate and appropriate information to diverse audiences (children and their parents) and large audiences (50+ people) in a professional manner.
• Cleans exhibits, holding areas, some public areas adjacent to exhibits, and ACC areas as directed.
• Prepares, distributes and monitors intake of appropriate animal diets.
• Prepares food for animal consumption; packages, divides, and mixes foods.
• Hand rears neonates of different taxa.
• Provides appropriate approved enrichment for collection animals.
• Observes animals for signs of illness, injury, reproductive behaviors, social organization, abnormal behaviors, etc.; Acquires data using appropriate department methods and records data on daily reports, food cards, veterinarian reports, training/enrichment records, and computers.
• Observes physical facilities for deficiencies or maintenance problems; corrects or reports observed deficiencies; writes maintenance work orders, and forwards same to supervisor.
Due to the wide variety of duties, this person must be detail oriented, a motivated worker, and a good communicator. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires forty hours per scheduled work week. Degree in Biology/Zoology or related field preferred, and one to two years’ zookeeper experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Zoo fleet insurance carrier.
