Internship Description:
The Reptile & Amphibian Discovery Zoo (RAD ZOO) 2015 summer internship program provides an intern with an opportunity to learn a variety of skills involved with the operations of a reptile and amphibian zoo. The RAD ZOO operates a facility open to the public featuring approximately 170 different species of reptiles and amphibians as well as a few species of birds, fish, and invertebrates. Operations of the zoo include traveling educational programs for a variety of venues to include but not limited to: schools, libraries, business functions, daycare centers, birthday parties, and scouting events. An intern would be expected to spend their hours assisting in several aspects of these operations. The majority of the responsibilities are detailed below:
1. Assist in the maintenance of a diverse reptile and amphibian collection to include daily animal husbandry, record keeping, and diet preparation.
2. Conduct wildlife educational programs using live animals at the zoo, or traveling to a variety of venues, with the eventual goal of working independently.
3. Assist in preparation of animal fact sheets for use in educational graphics.
4. Assist with marketing operations.
5. Assist in the design and construction of animal exhibits.
A successful candidate will be capable of working independently on occasion, showing flexibility of schedule, and willingness to occasionally work in adverse weather conditions. Good communication skills and an ability to speak publicly to large crowds are required. Intern candidates must be capable of lifting 50 pounds and possess a valid driver’s license and have their own health and auto insurance. Applicants will meet personal appearance standards while interacting with the public. An average work week is 40 hours.

Compensation and benefits
The intern will receive a $50 weekly stipend as well as a room in our home for the duration of the internship if working 40 hours per week. If the intern lives locally and does not require housing, they may work 3 days per week with a stipend of $10 per day.
