Description

Senior Keeper

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Keeper to join our team. Senior Keepers provides advanced knowledge in animal care and husbandry including exhibit maintenance, regular animal feeds, and developing training programs. These keepers are a point person on the team for best practices and mentoring less experienced staff.

Senior Keepers assist team leads with organizing operations, addressing animal welfare, and hiring and training interns. We are looking for a keeper with a biology degree or in a related field and 6 years experience in a facility working with birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and more. Conditioning and target training experience is preferred.

A day in the life of a Keeper

Senior Keepers are focused on the day-to-day tasks of animal welfare and assigned exhibits including husbandry, trainings, and enrichment. This position participates in Vet Rounds weekly and Animal Welfare Meetings quarterly and follows up on welfare concerns in a timely fashion. They also aid in creating Action Plans for welfare concerns with team leads. Wonders of Wildlife is an AZA facility and our senior keepers ensure we are following best practices and serve as IR for their assigned species and assist in internal and external conservation programs.

Education and Pre-requisites

•A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field is preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a four-year degree at the discretion of WOW.

• Preferred six years of experience in a facility working with birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and more. Supervisory experience preferred.

• Must have good communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Operant conditioning and target training experience is preferred.

• Ability to pass all required physicals and swim test to meet dive standards, within 1 year.

• Requires walking/standing approximately 75% of the time, sitting 10% of the time, forward bending and crouching 15% of the time, lifting up to 50 lbs.

• Requires proficiency with Personal Computer (P.C.) hardware and contemporary software including Microsoft Office Products.
