Description
A Senior Zookeeper is a highly skilled and experienced professional who is responsible for managing a team of zookeepers and ensuring the wellbeing, health and safety of the zoos animal collection. Senior keepers also play a crucial role in conservation efforts, education and public engagement.
Responsibilities:
1) Participating in and supervising the daily care and husbandry of the zoo’s animal collection. This includes feeding, cleaning, enriching and providing any needed medical care necessary.
2) Monitoring the behavior and health of the zoo’s animal collection and immediately communicating with the curator any issues or concerns.
3) Developing and implementing an enrichment program in conjunction with the enrichment committee
4) Leading and assisting in the management of a team of permanent and seasonal zoo keepers. This may be assigning tasks, providing efficiency audits, scheduling, etc. to ensure the efficient operation of the animal care department
5) Training new staff, setting performance standards and providing guidance as needed
6) Fostering a collaborative and positive work environment amongst team members
7) Maintaining accurate and up to date records of animal health, behavior and breeding programs.
8) Engage the public through educational programs, guided tours and impromptu animal talks to promote wildlife conservation and environmental awareness.
9) Ensure that safety protocols and procedures are followed to prevent accidents and ensure the wellbeing of staff, zoo guests and animals
Education and Pre-requisites
Requirements:
1) A minimum of 3 years in a paid zoological position working with a wide variety of species with a track record of increasing responsibilities
2) Strong knowledge of animal husbandry and behavior
3) Excellent leadership skills
4) A desire to learn and grow in the animal care field
5) Effective communication and public speaking skills
6) Physical fitness and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
7) A dedication to wildlife conservation and education.
Compensation and benefits
Pay scale ranging from $15.50 – $17.50/ hour dependent upon experience.
401k with matching and profit share
80 hours PTO, 2 three-day weekends every 6 weeks
Bonus pay twice yearly
