HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Wildlife Care Specialist Behavior will support San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission of saving species worldwide by training, handling and caring for exhibit animals used for public appearances and contact, such as educational programs. This position reports to a Wildlife Care Supervisor/Manager.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Train animals in new behaviors and reinforce trained behaviors
Transport animals to exhibit or performances
Assist Wildlife Care Associates with performance
Sets up props, stages or other performance areas
Groom animals for public appearance and health maintenance
Control animals to ensure public safety
Prepare animal feed
Feed animals
Administer prescribed medication and nutritional supplements
Assist medical staff in treatment of assigned animals
Keep feeding, medication and other records regarding animal care
Conduct special tours
Develop and train a wide variety of animals so that they may be used in public appearances, animal walk-around programs, wildlife workshops, school assemblies
Observe assigned animals with regard to general appearance, health, feeding habits
Clean and perform minor maintenance to animal compounds and exhibit areas
May operate light and medium duty motorized equipment, such as trucks, skiploaders, water trucks and forklifts
Make informational presentations to the public
Answer questions and provides information to the public regarding assigned animals
Adhere to all SDZWA and department policies and practices

Education and Pre-requisites

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Education, training and experience, which would clearly demonstrate the essential functions, knowledge and skills outlined; an example would be one or more years’ experience as a Wildlife Care Associate at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance or a comparable organization. This position requires the ability to lift moderate to heavy objects (up to 50 pounds). Applicant must be available any of the seven days of the week, including evenings and. A valid CA driver license in good standing is required.

Duration: Year round
Union position: Starting hourly wage $23.34
