Description
Examination is announced to establish an employment list to fill 1 vacancy in the Zoo department and future vacancies as they occur to perform semi-skilled work in the care of exotic zoo animals and the maintenance of zoo grounds and facilities. This is an intermediate-level position that emphasizes direct care of animals in addition to manual work functions; individuals in this class will have a higher degree of interaction with the visiting public as well as direct contact with the animals in this position.
Zoo keeper is responsible for daily care of zoo/exotic animals. Duties include preparing diets, feeding animals in assigned area, cleaning exhibits, minor repairs in exhibits, grounds maintenance in and around exhibits, supplying enrichment to assigned animals, operant conditioning, interaction with visitors, assist with animal programs for education classes, assist with set-up and work during special events, and assist with general daily running of the facility. Zoo keeper II position has more responsibilities and assists in mentoring keeper I position. Opportunity to be the lead of a program, ex. enrichment, conservation, animal welfare, etc. The Alexandria Zoo is a small AZA facility that utilizes strong independent individuals to work in a family type setting. We have a diverse small collection of about 500 animals.
Education and Pre-requisites
• High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two years of paid experience in the care of animals comparable to that of a Zookeeper I; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
Work Schedule:
5 Days a Week

This examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, a performance test or any combination thereof deemed necessary to adequately screen and rank applicants. Examination notices will be sent out via email if one is provided on the application, otherwise, acceptable applicants will receive a letter in the mail with a testing date, time, and location. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their previous training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. Compensation and benefits
Salary Range: $24,717.00 – 29,660.00
