Description

Chehaw Park & Zoo is looking for a motivated individual to provide excellent animal care and welfare to assigned areas. This is a permanent part-time position requiring 24-28 hours per week. The ideal candidate will have experience caring for small mammals, birds, and reptiles and be comfortable working with both snakes and parrots. A working knowledge of proper animal husbandry is preferred.

This role will have time split between caring for education-program animals and working in the commissary to prepare diets for all Zoo animals while maintaining compliance with all USDA regulations. Additional duties may be assigned.

BASIC JOB DUTIES
*Attend to assigned animals; feed and provide fresh water
*Sanitize enclosure furniture/floors and food/water dishes as scheduled or necessary
*Prepare diets and maintain the Zoo commissary
*Observe animals for health problems; collect fecal samples as needed for testing; administer medications to animals
*Assist in conducting guest educational programming; interact with the public to answer questions and exhibit animals
*Assist in the capture and restraint of animals, when necessary
*Record relevant information in recordkeeping database, including animal observations, health concerns, and treatments
*Consistently and reliably report for all scheduled shifts without tardiness; attend staff meetings
*Support institution’s Vision, Mission, and Values statement
*Maintain a positive example in meeting the needs of fellow staff and visitors

Education and Pre-requisites

*High school diploma or GED
*1+ years previous experience in caring for mammals, birds, and/or reptiles
*1+ years of previous paid or volunteer work experience involving animal husbandry, wildlife biology, or related field preferred
*Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to/from work
*Basic computer skills
*Must be able to lift 60 pounds and work outdoors in all weather conditions on a daily basis; must be able to tolerate strong odors, dust, hay, dander, and dampness; may be required to stand or sit for extended periods of time and/or to twist, bend, crouch, squat, climb, crawl, kneel, jump, swim, or carry objects for short distances; may be exposed to chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, moving mechanical parts, vehicles, and potentially dangerous animals
*Willingness to participate in staff vaccination program to prevent Zoonotic disease transfer, scheduled as recommended by CDC; may include tetanus, TB skin test, rabies, Hepatitis A & B, Covid-19, Influenza; vaccinations may be provided to successful candidates

Compensation and benefits

*Job Type: Part Time (24-28 hours per week)
*Pay: $9.13 – 11.06 per hour, based on experience
